Doonside Samaritans clean up railway station

Lionel Swart and Micheal Evered-Hall of Far Horizon flats took it upon themselves to clean the Doonside train station.

TWO concerned Doonside dwellers united to rid the local railway station of the mass of litter that has gathered alongside the tracks.

These Good Samaritans tackled the deed bright and early on Thursday, 27 July.

“I live in Far Horizon flats,” explained Michael Evered-Hall. “Living right at the end of my floor, I walk a distance every day and cannot help but stare at the litter-ridden Doonside station that my block overlooks.”

The litter that was piled up along the tracks at the Doonside station.

Lionel Swart, who is on holiday, stays in the same block of flats. The men decided to get together and clean the area, as no-one else would.

“I approached the municipality and they said these grounds are not their concern as they are supposed to be maintained by Transnet,” explained Michael. “Doonside station master, Thami Ngobese has been so incredibly helpful with this project. He tried effortlessly to reach Transnet but was unable to succeed.”

Michael often hears people say they’d never live in Doonside because of its litter-ridden appearance. Michael explained that it’s not the whole of Doonside but only a few spots, such as the station, that are so unsightly.

The Far Horizon resident gave up on relying on the authorities and decided to do the clean-up along with his newfound friend, Lionel. He is now considering making this a monthly event if need be.

“If I could get a few more people together to join me, the task could be done far quicker and the Doonside station would look neater for longer,” he said.

His amazingly positive attitude towards the failure of service delivery is a reaction to behold, especially as too often this is the extent residents have to go to, to live in a clean, litter-free environment.
