Weapons recovered after attempted cash-in-transit robbery

Local response officers helped recover weapons used in a botched robbery in the KwaMakhutha area on Tuesday morning, 11 July.

“Heavily armed suspects attempted to rob a cash-in-transit van at about 7.15am, but they were unsuccessful,” said ET Rapid Response South Coast managing member, Tony Lokker.

A description of their vehicle was circulated.

“While our tactical response team (TRT) assisted SAPS at Umbogintwini station with a riot, we were informed that an Isipingo SAPS vehicle had spotted one of the vehicles allegedly involved in the robbery. The suspects were travelling north along Old Main Road,” said Lokker.

Multiple units responded along with ET’s TRT team.

The robbers started shooting at police members, who stood their ground. Two of the robbers jumped out of their vehicle by the Lamontville entrance and fled on foot.

TRT members and SAPS gave chase, while other members followed the vehicle. With the help of the air wing, the vehicle was located.

SAPS K9 unit members and TRT members recovered one pistol and a rifle which the robbers hid in the grass along the N2.

Further searches were done along the river bed where the vehicle was abandoned, but unfortunately the robbers managed to escape.

The recovered vehicle was stolen in Umbilo in March.
