Sanctuary founders fear growing building costs

The climbing costs to build the sanctuary is becoming a growing concern for the quartet of founders who are funding the entire project themselves.

FREEDOM Ride Powerbreed Rescue (FRPR) has broken ground on the construction site of its future sanctuary.

The group has big plans for the land next to the local SPCA in Nyati Road, but have been daunted by quotations which have sparked fear in the minds of the FRPR’s founders, who are currently self-funding the entire project.

The sanctuary is being constructed on land next to the Amanzimtoti SPCA.

The Powerbreed Rescue team has a vision for the patch of previously wasted land, however the climbing costs are a growing concern for the quartet of founders.

“The sanctuary will use only natural products. No harsh cleaning detergents will be used and building materials will be natural products such as wood and stone,” explained Karen Wadsworth Borain. “We want to leave as light a footprint as possible on the environment, while offering a calm, homey feel for the rescues.”

One way in which the public can play an important role is by becoming kennel sponsors.
“In fact, we have just secured our first kennel sponsor from Sonia Louw, who has set up a recurring debit order. Community members who would like to get involved with our dogs are invited to apply to become volunteers to walk our dogs and interact with them – this is one of the most important and rewarding jobs of all,” said Karen

The FRPR aims to construct all-natural kennels such as these.

FRPR is in desperate need of reduced rates on or donations of building materials, specifically for fencing, wood, security, plumbing and electrical items.

“I want the community to feel they have played a direct role in getting the sanctuary going,” said Karen. “Sponsors who donate anything will be able to have their signage up as well, enabling free advertising.”

If there are any members of the community, building or security companies that would like to get involved, contact FRPR on 083-631-4147 or visit the Facebook page.
