Umkomaas police catch illegal gill netters red-handed

They had four nets and plenty of fish, including a 4kg to 5kg kingfish.

An alert Umkomaas SAPS member nabbed two illegal gill netters and scores of fish taken out of the Umkomaas River on Thursday morning, 29 June.

According to Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) committee member, George Snodey, who is passionate about catching these illegal fishermen, officer Logan Naidoo spotted the two men by the Umkomaas River bridge and stopped to search them.

“They had four nets and plenty of fish, including a 4kg to 5kg kingfish, juvenile grunter, large mullet, perch, a skate and crab, which the police successfully released back into the water.”

The two men, who are from Empangeni, were detained by Umkomaas SAPS.
