Still no sign of sardines on the East Coast

KZN Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade said all is quiet on the East Coast with regards to the annual sardine run.

The sardines are living up to their elusive nature as everyone is eagerly waiting to welcome them to the Sapphire Coast.

KZN Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade said all is quiet on the East Coast with regards to the annual sardine run.

“It is quiet at the moment. There are a lot of dolphins on the coast, which we haven’t seen for a while and that is a good sign,” he said.

Sardine fever in Amanzimtoti ignited last week with the news of netting in Scottburgh on Wednesday. Some sards were also netted in Isipingo, Umgababa and Toti on Thursday, and Isipingo on Friday.

Since Saturday, there has been no sign of them.

“There have been pockets of red-eye sards, with small pockets of sardines among them, but we haven’t seen any large shoals like in the past,” said Anderson-Reade. “We will just have to wait and see if it happens, but I remain positive.”
