Verify service providers’ identity, warns police

According to police, suspects often wear eThekwini Municipality overalls and attempt to convince the house occupants they are there to check water or electricity meters.

Amanzimtoti SAPS are appealing to homeowners to take extra precautions and verify the identity of anyone who comes to their house for any work-related issues.

“It has come to our attention that often house robberies are committed by people who pose as workers from either the municipality or Eskom to check meters,” said Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

“These people often wear eThekwini Municipality overalls and they will convince the house occupants they are there to check water or electricity meters. They then allegedly hold the occupants up and take household appliances and flee the scene.”

Similar cases have been reported in and around Durban.

Amanzimtoti SAPS offered the following tips:

* Employees who read electricity meters do not go inside houses to read meters.

* Telkom will only come to the house if a fault is reported by the owner of the house.

* Homeowners need to inform anyone in the house to not open the gate or door for any stranger unless they inform the person prior about the repairs that are to be done during their absence.

* It is also advisable that any repairs be done when the house owner is present for them to verify the identity of the repair team.
