Men arrested with unlicensed firearms

The men will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate's Court today (Tuesday, 27 June).

Seven men were arrested and five unlicensed firearms recovered in an intelligence-driven operation conducted by Durban Public Order Police at KwaMakhutha and Umkomaas last night (Monday, 26 June).

Members went to a house in the KwaMakhutha area where they arrested two men who were found in possession of an unlicensed Norinco pistol with a magazine.

Members continued with their operations that led them to the Llfracombe area where they made a further six arrests.

Four more unlicensed firearms were recovered, which included a shotgun, 9mm pistols and a special revolver with assorted live rounds.

A shotgun was one of the firearms recovered.

All the men were charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday, 27 June).

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.

KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members for their successful operation. “We will continue with our raids in an attempt to get rid of illegal firearms in the province.

“I also encourage community members to give us information about anyone who may have illegal firearms in their possession. We also appeal to those who are keeping firearms belonging to deceased family members to hand them over to the police while making necessary arrangements for new licenses to possess them,” he said.
