Extension granted for railway bridge repairs

This has been a difficult job due to the traffic, pedestrians and the railway continuing to operate

A six week extension has been granted to Icon Construction for repairs to the railway bridge at the Kingsway and Adams Road intersection to be completed.

This will see the project drawing towards the end of August.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge said this is due to complications and further damage uncovered between the time of tendering and inception.

Soil is compacted on top of the gabion basket wall.

“That taken into consideration, the project is proceeding well and according to expectation. Residents are requested to exercise caution and tolerance,” said Cllr Beetge.

“This has been a difficult job due to the traffic, pedestrians and the railway continuing to operate,” said site foreman, Daryl Diedericks of Icon Construction.

“We should be complete by the end of August.”

The gabin basket wall on the north side is complete and the south one is close to being finished. Soil is being compacted on top of the gabion basket wall, before the new concrete wall is reinstated.

The demolishing of the old concrete wall is about 95 per cent done. This has not been an easy task, as workers had to work around a stormwater pipe and various telecommunication cables.

Once the pipe and cables are secured, the concrete slab for the pedestrian walkway will be laid.

“It hasn’t been an easy job, but we are getting there,” said Diedericks.
