UPDATE: Doonside shopkeeper killed for R3,000

Amanzimtoti police are searching for three men, one of whom was armed, who are believed to be responsible for the shooting of a Doonside shop owner on Monday morning, 12 June.

It is alleged that at about 6.40am, the deceased Rahman MD Mahbubur (26) was behind the counter at First Pride Mini Superette shop, talking on his cellphone. “His cousin, who also works in the shop, came to stand next to him when three unknown men entered,” said Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

The suspects were two Indian men in their early 20s and an older black man, who produced a firearm. Two men walked into the store to check if anyone else was present, then told Rahman and his cousin they were there to rob the store. The armed man stood outside the shop to keep watch.

The victims were told to leave the area behind the counter and stand in the aisle.
One man stayed with the victims while the other one went around the counter, opened a draw at the bottom of the till and removed cash estimated to be about R3,000.

Both men were leaving the store when Rahman grabbed the robber who took the cash. The robber told the gunman keeping watch to shoot Rahman. He shot Rahman once in the chest.

The robbers fled the scene on foot, crossing over the Doonside railway station bridge.

Rahman took a few steps out the shop and then back into the shop, where he collapsed. He was declared dead by a paramedic who responded to the scene.

The suspects are still at large.
