Lions club appoints new district governor

A decade of devoted service has seen Amanzimtoti’s Ken Toward elected as Lions 410C District Governor, an area which covers KZN, Free State and Lesotho.

In Cape Town, he was elected as the incoming district governor and he will be formally inducted by the International President in Chicago in July.

“I am honoured to serve this district,” said Ken.

UK-born Ken came into the Lions fold after his wife Helen worked as a carer at Jona Vaughan Home for the physical and mentally challenged and as a trauma councillor for the community-run Safecare project.

In 2007, Helen was invited to join the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti and Ken was invited to a boy’s weekend camping with Amanzimtoti Lions. “Somehow, the roles were reversed and I ended up joining Amanzimtoti Lions,” said Ken. Helen became part of the working group known as the ‘Amanzimtoti Lions Ladies’.

Over the years he has held many positions – president, treasurer and director. Within the district he has also held various positions from district chairman, zonal chairman, second and first vice district governor.

“My theme for the year, ‘honour the past’ suits my present situation and Lions. Be proud of the present and look to the future with enthusiasm. I am extremely proud to say I am a Lion and equally proud to say I belong to the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti.

“As the incoming district governor, I have set specific goals for my year ahead. Goals which I believe will see our organisation grow and implement changes within our structures.

“As Lions of district 410C, we need to focus on making our organisation attractive to those of different cultures, race, gender and age. Lionism is a way of life,” said Ken.
