Department replaces water pipes along R102

Motorists are urged to exercise patience and caution while work is in progress.

The Department of Transport (DOT) opened the road surface on Saturday, 3 June and found a collapsed water pipe at the sinkhole along the R102.

The hole lies about 150 metres past the Illovo Beach turn-off in the left-hand lane as you travel towards Karridene.

“The damaged pipe has already been removed, but DOT also noted the joints of other pipes are starting to separate,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

“As a result, they plan on replacing more than one section. Starting today (Monday, 5 June), they will further excavate and the road will revert to single lane traffic with a stop and go on either end.”

Motorists are urged to exercise patience and caution while work is in progress.
