Lions Club of Amanzimtoti inducts new leader

The new president said she is humbled that the Lions have placed their trust and belief in her.

Karin Preston (49) has been inducted as the 49th president of the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti.

Karin, who lives on the bluff, was born in Bloemfontein and did her schooling at Gelofte in Pinetown when her family moved to Westville in 1975.

She relocated to the Bluff in 2007 and became a member of the Durban South Lions Club in 2005, where she served as president for two terms. She joined eThekwini Lions Club in 2002 and transferred to Amanzimtoti Lions in March 2016.

She was inducted as the 49th president of the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti at an induction dinner at the Lions clubhouse on Saturday, 27 May.

“I’m very excited to be nominated and selected as the new Lions president,” said Karin. “I’m humbled that the Lions have placed their trust and belief in me. I’m looking forward to the year ahead, which will be a busy one.”

One of Karin’s focal points this year will be the mid-year Lions conference in October.

Toti Lions will continue with signature projects such as the Jona Vaughan Home, Ethelbert Children’s Home, diabetes testing and diabetes children’s camp, sight and hearing, Leos and youth, bursaries for the three Toti high schools, environment, services to senior citizens, hunger relief and food security, assistance to children with cancer, Peace Poster contest and providing wheelchairs.

Fundraising initiatives will include Christmas cakes, Highland Gathering, club fundraisers such as a quiz, donkey derby or theme evening and club socials.

Karin met her husband Roy through the Lions in 2006, as he is also a member, and they were married the following year. She has a 19-year-old daughter Belinda.

“I have received so much from Lions. I even got a husband through Lions. The only hobby I have is Lions,” she said, in reference to the many different caps she wears.
These include cabinet secretary, member of the global membership team, district chairman of the diabetes portfolio, and district chairman of the Leos portfolio.

“It is so rewarding to see the improvement you make as a Lion in the community.”
