The local resident, who wished to remain unnamed, was one of few to have her beloved pet recover after contracting Parvo.

“On Monday, 22 May I noticed my three-year-old miniature Yorkshire Terrier wasn’t her usual self,” explained the owner. “Usually running and playing, she was now extremely lethargic.”

“By Wednesday morning I realised she needed to be taken to the vet,” she said. “Over the two days prior I noted she was suffering with diarrhea. Her stool became more dark and bloody as the time went on.”

Years ago, the woman had two Boerboels who had contracted the virus.

“I recognised all the symptoms of my little yorkie, because of my past experience with the virus,” she said. “I had learnt then how important urgency is when it comes to this.”

That Wednesday morning she rushed her yorkie to the vet, in the hope that something could still be done. Fortunately, the virus was still in its early stages and after a night in the vet’s rooms, the miniature yorkie was able to be fetched and taken home.

“She was the only one of my seven dogs that didn’t have her Parvo vaccinations up to date,” said the owner. “I can’t emphasise the importance of this.”

The vet explained that the virus isn’t spread through neglect. When the weather is as rainy as it’s been, all the moisture causes the virus to spread like wildfire. Any pooch without its shots up to date has a very good chance of contracting the virus.

In puppies, the virus is almost always fatal. In older dogs, they have chance of survival if treatment is started immediately.
