THE last bell rang for retired Amanzimtoti firefighter, Shane Wheeler (56) who died on Sunday, 14 May.
For 40 years he dedicated and risked his life as a firefighter to protect others who were in danger. Although his job was to save others, he was a hero in many other ways.
His wife, Michelle Wheeler said her husband was well known in Amanzimtoti as everyone saw him as a person they could trust and call on to save them or just talk to.
“He was a loving father to Travis, Chantell, Brandon and Samantha Wheeler and a doting grandfather to Riley and Emily. Even with him gone, his memories and legacy will live on through his children and his grandchildren. He always used to say he was waiting for the world to change. And in a way he was that change – you can see it in everyone he had an encounter with,” she said.
Wheeler will be laid to rest on Friday, 19 May at 2pm at the St Winifred’s Methodist Church on Morton Lane, Warner Beach. The procession will start from the Amanzimtoti firestation where the firefighters will start a funeral march which will proceed to the church.
“This will not be a sad occasion, my husband’s wish was to not be mourned but to have his life celebrated. That’s the type of person he was, always so happy,” added Michelle.
