Thousands support Highland Gathering

The extra long weekend saw the South Coast flooded with visitors from afar.

THE Highland Gathering attracted a whopping 10,000 people who were entertained by the festivities that the Amanzimtoti Lion Club event offered last Saturday, 29 April.

With great weather on the day, the community pulled together for the day.

The extra long weekend saw the South Coast flooded with visitors from afar. “All the local accommodation venues were completely booked,” said president of Amanzimtoti Lions Club, Carol Botha. “This long weekend the town saw more visitors than over the usually-popular Easter weekend.”

The annual Gathering is the Lions Club’s main fundraiser, from which proceeds go back to the community through the club’s many projects. “This was a bumper year – one of the very best the Lions have seen,” said Carol.

This is the second year the Highland Gathering has ever seen all 33 pipe bands travel from around the country to participate in the event. Internationally renown Irish piper, Terry Tulley judged this year’s pipe bands at the festival. The full complement of Scottish pipers set the mood on Saturday, bringing some English culture to the coastline.

The Lions Club thanks every person who helped make the event a success.
“To the three local high schools, Megaforce Bike Club and the general public who helped at the gates and with cold drinks, the Lions are eternally grateful,” said Carol. “I personally thank all my hardworking members. Without you the popular event wouldn’t even be possible.”
