Cable thieves’ plans cut short

Former CCPO officer, Les Spence suspected guys were cutting cables in the sugarcane fields.

A cable thief was apprehended and stolen cable recovered by the CCPO on Sunday afternoon, 26 March.

“We received a call from former CCPO officer, Les Spence who was on his motorcycle on the road going from the R603 to Illovo Sugar Mill to say he suspected guys were cutting cables in the sugarcane fields,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

“En route to the scene, Jason Hewitt and his crewman picked up some foot patrol guards to assist if the suspects fled. Toti SAPS was in the area, as was a Blue Security/CCPO patrol vehicle.

Everyone waited at the top of the hill until Les had briefed them on the situation before they set off to catch the thieves.”

On arrival both cable thieves fled, with one escaping and one not so lucky as he was apprehended.

Many metres of cable had been cut and the men were busy stripping it in the fields.
