A colourful first for SA coin collectors

Colourful coins astound.

NUMISMATISTS will be delighted by the colour series coins released by the South African Mint during the Cape Town Flower Show in late 2016.

“The crown-sized coins are a first-of-a-kind innovation in SA that sees colour applied to coins,” read a statement by the SA Mint.

The range features two different R5 and R10 sterling-silver coins with only 500 of each minted.

One of the R5 coins has a colourful depiction of a blue-bearded disa and the other has a vibrant Hermanus cliff gladiolus. On the R10 coins are a bright orange-breasted sunbird and a lively male Cape rock-jumper. A map of South Africa showing the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve features on all the coins.

“Through coin-making, we view ourselves as narrators of the rich heritage of our country. This is a role we take seriously as the official mint of South Africa, and one that has provided us with opportunities to innovate. We proudly present an aspect of our natural heritage, for the first time in glorious colour. These collectable coins are not only for avid coin collectors; we are thrilled to see how well they were received by the general public, both young and old, at the Cape Town Flower Show,” said managing director of the SA Mint, Tumi Tsehlo.

These coins are not in general circulation but are available for purchase from the SA Mint.
