A day in the life: Wire tree-of-life crafting vendor

His 'trees of life' are made using the rim of a bicycle wheel, with wire wound and tangled every which way inbetween the rim, to exemplify the iconic tree of life.

Many locals may have seen wire-crafted ‘trees of life’ on show throughout Warner Beach.

Their creator, Welington Msana (32) shares his time between the creating of his wire masterpieces and his love for soccer.

The craftsman travels between Margate, Ballito, Amanzimtoti and Scottburgh every week, showing off his creations. Born and living in Zimbabwe for most of his upbringing, he frequently travels back to visit friends and family, not forgetting his roots. Welington travels to his various spots along the coast by taxi. For this reason, he cannot carry all his creations, but has to prioritise, carrying only a few with him every day.

Many locals may have seen wire-crafted ‘trees of life’ on show throughout Warner Beach.

His ‘trees of life’ are made using the rim of a bicycle wheel, with wire wound and tangled every which way inbetween the rim, to exemplify the iconic tree of life. He then varnishes his metal work, allowing it to weather and withstand many years outdoors. The trees come in various bicycle rim sizes.

Welington cannot guarantee he can be found at any set spot in Warner Beach, as competition among vendors is rife. With everyone having their unannounced territory, he is continually chased away.

Apart from the tree of life, Welington uses his talent with wire craft to create beaded geckos, hearts and crafty keyring accessories and artwork, all depending on how much he can carry with him on the taxi.

If interested in owning a tree of life, make sure to keep an eye out for the creative craftsman in the Warner Beach area.
