Lifesaving club irate at palm tree theft

The club believes it was more an act of vandalism than theft

WINKLESPRUIT Lifesaving Club members are infuriated as a local’s memorial palm trees have been stolen.

The palm trees were donated and planted around a bench in front of the lifesaving club by the family of the unnamed member who died last year.

The club believes it was more an act of vandalism than theft. The palm trees which were planted in memory of the lifeguard and familiar face of Winkle Beach who died last year, have been ripped out the ground. Most were stolen and two had been tossed aside and discarded nearby.

“As a community-serving lifesaving club, we feel disgusted. As for the family members who planted the trees in memory of their son, they’re disappointed in the community,” said Mark Barber of Winklespruit Lifesaving Club.

This is not the first theft the lifesaving club has experienced. Wooden fencing, shower heads and taps are some of the many items that have literally disappeared over night in recent years.

“We often arrive at the club to find property has been stolen or vandalised. It leaves us feeling so disheartened,” said Mark.

The lifesaving club asks the public to respect the club, as it serves more than just beachgoers of the town. As for the vandals, if they’re caught legal consequences will follow. Anyone with information regarding the theft or vandalism, please contact the Winklespruit Lifesaving Club’s acting captain, Gareth Hazell on 071-897-4599.
