Spanish netball call-up for Kuswag girls

A fundraiser golf day takes place at Umdoni Golf Club on Saturday, 4 March.

Two Kuswag Skool netball players have been selected to the KZN action netball U15 team.

Kayla Els and Juane Pretorius, both 14-years-old and grade 9 pupils, were selected to represent their province last August to do battle in an inter-provincial tournament to take place in Centurion in April.

Last month they made the cut for a provincial invitational team to take part in the prestigious 2017 Spanish Netball Festival in La Manga, Spain in October.

“I was excited and surprised to make the teams,” said Juane, who also made the KZN squad last year.

“I was happy to hear I’m in the team,” said Kayla. “I was hoping to make it, but not expecting it.” Kayla also made the team last year and was invited to play in the USA, but her parents deemed her too young and finances played a part in her not making the trip.

The KZN U14B team won bronze at last year’s inter-provincial tournament in Pretoria. Kayla, as part of the B team, made history by beating other provinces’ A teams.

She was honoured during the Northern Areas Netball Association’s junior players awards ceremony last year as the players’ player for the U14Bs, as someone who stood out in the team and showed lots of team spirit.

To participate in the inter-provincials in Centurion, the girls have to raise between R6,000 and R8,000 each. To wing it to play in Spain, they have to each raise R22,000.

To help them raise the funds, their parents are holding a golf day at Umdoni Golf Club on Saturday, 4 March.

The cost is R200 per person and the format is a fourball. Tee-off is from 11.30am.

“For the girls from Kuswag Skool to be chosen in both prestigious action netball tournaments is a massive achievement and we, as parents, are very proud of both of them, as is the school,” said Kayla’s father Louis.

“We hope the Toti public will come out in their numbers to support the girls at the golf day. We will have lucky draws and we need sponsors for prizes.”
