Dog theft haunts pet-owners again

The SPCA appeals to the public to microchip and sterilise their pets

A MALE pitbull dog was stolen from an Anna Scheepers Road residence on 31 January.

A group of youngsters were spotted walking the stolen dog on a big chain in the Illovo area, fortunately the pitbull was recovered from an Illovo township and reunited with its owner.

“I want the public to be aware of the number of dog thefts happening on our doorstep,” said manager at Toti SPCA, Tracey Girling.

After the owner of the stolen dog put out flyers, they had a tip-off from a youngster that he knew where the dog was. The dog was recovered from the Illovo township.

“Both my inspector and the CCPO have witnessed these youngsters approaching houses and calling the dogs. I think people need to be aware of this and report any unusual activity to the SPCA or CCPO as this is getting out of hand,” said Tracey.

Tracey is certain the youngsters are being paid to steal these dogs which will eventually end up being used in the fighting rings.

The SPCA appeals to the public to microchip and sterilise their pets, as the dog fighters do not use sterilised animals for fighting.

“I also ask anyone with information regarding the dog fighting and theft in our area to report it to the SPCA so that we can take action and rid our town of this despicable sport,” said Tracey.

The SPCA thanks the community for the very generous donations of dog and cat food received in response to their Facebook appeal.
