Large cash withdrawal stolen from woman

She was robbed at gunpoint at a mall in Umbilo after making the withdrawal from a bank in Amanzimtoti

A woman was robbed of “an extremely large sum of cash” at about 11.30am on Tuesday, 31 January.

Police have issued a stern warning to people to desist from making large withdrawals in the wake of the incident, which took place after she withdrew the money from a bank in an Amanzimtoti shopping mall.

The 48-year-old woman proceeded to another mall in the Umbilo area after she had made her withdrawal. While in the parking lot she was attacked by four unknown gunmen, who robbed her of the cash and two cellphones before fleeing the scene in their getaway vehicle.

Members of the public are urged to refrain from carrying large sums of cash due to the high incidence of gangs targeting people carry cash.

“Looking at the recent incidents of people being robbed after withdrawing large sums of cash at the banks, we issue a stern warning to the members of the public to refrain from withdrawing large sums of cash as they put their lives at risk of being killed by ruthless thugs who target such people. They should consider safer options such as electronic transfers or internet banking,” said the SAPS acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.

Police appeal to anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the local police station or  Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
