January’s adoptions leave Toti SPCA ecstatic

WITH its January adoption rate the highest ever recorded at Amanzimtoti SPCA, the animal welfare shelter has reason to celebrate.

With 20 dogs and nine cats bidding farewell to the shelter that rescued them, they’re off to see what their new life has in store.

The organisation’s staff and volunteers are ecstatic about January’s adoptions.

“Being the first month of the year, these adoptions have been unreal,” said manager at Toti SPCA, Tracey Girling.

January is usually a tough time as the aftermath of the festive season leaves the shelter full. This month is when families are going back to work and school, leaving no time to introduce a new member into the family.

“January is financially a very bad month,” said Tracey. The December holidays were great in the sense that many strays were collected shortly after being brought in.

The SPCA believes that their Facebook page has raised awareness, where good-looking animals they’ve shared have sparked an interest in the community.

Many of the visitors’ reason for homing a new animal was that their pet had died or their existing one was in need of a friend. “People can’t live without their animals, they love them,” said Tracey.

While the shelter had a wide reach, she admits most adoptions were made by Toti residents.

“We’re so grateful to the community for their endless support and for adopting our babies,” said Tracey, on behalf of the SPCA.

The organisation asks the public not to report cruelty or emergencies on the Facebook page, as the account is managed by volunteers and admin members and is not monitored 24 hours a day.

The shelter is always in need of new puppy and kitten toys, since the ones they have are well worn.
