Donation call as hungry Toti families need food

Local woman spearheads drive to amass donations for needy families, as hard hit times bite

A local resident who was involved in initiating the Toti-only shoebox project more than a decade ago has turned her attention to helping feed needy families in the area who are going hungry.

Ann Butler came to hear about the plight of about 30 people in need, who live in the former Sunset Lodge Salvation Army building in Doonside, as well as another five families throughout the greater Toti area. Among the Doonside building residents are nine children.
“They’re all families whose breadwinners may be without work or who have fallen on hard times. I can’t stomach the idea of people going hungry,” said Ann, explaining what drove her to become involved.

Armed with the aid of a registered non-profit organisation, Ann is appealing to local individuals, churches and businesses to assist with food donations.

“These people need the staples. Substantial foods such as bread, flour, oil, sugar, vegetables, potatoes, pasta, rice, tinned foods, tinned meat, eggs, beans and toilet paper, washing powder and cleaning detergents,” she said.

As many of the families have freezer facilities, frozen vegetables and meats would also be welcomed. ”Even things like frozen sausage rolls and so on,” added Ann.
