JUST IN: Fire contained at mall retailer

Metro Fire and ER24 paramedics treated about 15 patients at the scene

There was great excitement at Galleria Mall on Monday, 23 January when a fire broke out in Checkers Hyper at about noon.

According to ER24 paramedic, Leo Fourie, a deep fryer caught fire. “One of the staff members threw a fire blanket over the fire and the fire extinguishers put the fire out,” he said.

Metro Fire and ER24 paramedics treated about 15 patients at the scene. “Two staff members who are asthmatic had to be treated after the DCP powder from the extinguishers irritated their lungs.

We transported about six patients to Kingsway Hospital for minor injuries and some were treated on scene but declined to go to hospital.”
