Amanzimtoti’s Scottish link cherished

Many teachers, ministers and tradesman have taught in locol schools, worked in our churches and contributed greatly with their skills in the local industries.

AS in so many countries throughout the world, many Scots have settled far from their native land and have been major contributors to their adopted home.

This is true here in this towne – even though Amanzimtoti is not the de-colonisation of Aberdeen-on–Sea, no more than Kwa-Makhuta is derived from Kilmarnock, the affinity of our town to Scotland is unmistakable.

Many teachers, ministers and tradesman have taught in locol schools, worked in our churches and contributed greatly with their skills in the local industries. Many local citizens can proudly trace their Scots heritage.

Not only is Amanzimtoti home to one of the biggest Highland Gatherings in the world, several pipers live here and contribute on many occasions to events including the Remembrance Day parade. Associations with Scottish ties include two Masonic lodges on the role of the Grand Lodge of Scotland and a branch of the Transvaal Scottish regiment.

In accordance with these traditions, every year Lodge Fort Jameson holds the celebration of the life of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet. This celebration, including the ‘Address to the Haggis’, takes place on Friday, 27 January. It is being hosted by the Lincoln Steakhouse and those wishing to participate in the celebration must book by calling 031-916-7588. The evening commences with the Celtic grace at 7pm.
