Voluntary lifeguard almost drowns after surf ski incident

Paramedics praise decisive action of fellow lifeguards on the beach who pulled him from the surf

PARAMEDICS have praised the swift action of Amanzimtoti beach lifeguards who responded to a near drowning at about 1.40pm on Sunday afternoon, 15 January.

Amanzimtoti Lifesaving Club was hosting the KZN champs, when a voluntary lifeguard competing in the competition went out on a surf ski and flipped over in a wave.

His foot was caught in one of the straps as the waves continued to toss him and the ski around in the surf. Netcare 911 paramedics who were called to the beach found the man had been removed from the water by fellow lifeguards “who need to be commended for the way they removed him to prevent any further injuries,” said Netcare 911’s Chris Botha. “The patient was found in the first aid room with serious injuries and symptoms of near drowning. ”

He was stabilised by the Netcare 911 advanced life support paramedic and his team before they transported him to a specialised hospital in Durban for further care.
