Four Ntuzuma scholars killed on first day of school

Eighteen injured were treated at the scene, while a critically injured patient was airlifted to hospital after crash between taxi and bus

The first day of school got off to a tragic start in Ntuzuma, north of Durban when four children were killed in a crash between a bus and a minibus.

The crash site, near the bus depot on Nyala Road, saw 18 patients being treated for injuries sustained in the rush hour crash.

KZN Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesman, Robert McKenzie confirmed there were four fatalities, three boys and a girl, all of whom were school children. The KZN EMS paramedics worked alongside multiple private ambulance services to treat a total of 18 people who were injured in the crash.

An unknown number of people were transported to several hospitals in the area. A critically injured patient was airlifted by the KZN Department of Health’s EMS helicopter.

The cause of the crash is unknown but will be the subject of a police investigation.
