Storm claims Adams Mission home’s roofs

HEAVY rains on Thursday, 8 December destroyed the roofs of several houses in Adams Mission.

By Smiso Ngcobo

The Mnyandus were one of the families whose home’s roof was removed by the heavy rains.

The storm took its toll at about 4pm.

Sbongiseni Mnyandu said the high winds and heavy rain only lasted 20 minutes but in this short space of time, more than 15 houses were damaged. “I wasn’t surprised that my roof was blown away by the wind, because it is an old house but I was surprised by the short duration of time that this incident took – it was just 20 minutes or less,” said Sbongiseni. He was on his way back home from work when the storm unleashed its power.

Three children inside the house during the incident were unharmed but shocked and traumatised.

The family registered for the RDP houses in 2008 but there were no actions taken as yet. “In 2008 my house was damaged by the floods, and I decided to register for the RDP, but they were no actions taken, and I registered again in August this year, but I’m still waiting,” Mnyandu said.

Syabonga Mthembu, whose house was also damaged, is also awaiting an RDP house. “Three months ago, four men came and measured my yard, and promised they would build a four-room RDP house for me. It has been three months since and I’m still waiting,” said Mthembu.

Syabonga’s nephew, Samkelisiwe Mthembu told the Sun she saw trees falling down and heard dogs barking but she couldn’t see what was causing their reaction. “I was so shocked to see the trees falling down. The dogs were barking like they were seeing a ghost, but after 20 minutes it was over,” said Samkelisiwe.
