N2 south sinkhole repairs completed

Jersey barriers placed along the centre of the N2 will be moved on Thursday, rendering both lanes accessible to traffic.

During a follow-up site meeting on Wednesday, 14 December it was confirmed that the N2 south at Adams Road would be passable by late Thursday afternoon, 15 December.

This comes six months after the slow lane of the N2 southbound carraigeway was washed away during a major storm at the end of July.

The sides and lower end of the washaway before the Adams Road off-ramp were declared stable some three weeks ago and crews have been working around the clock to fill the cavity caused by the storm.

Weather permitting, an asphalt layer was planned to be poured at about 1pm on Wednesday.

The jersey barriers placed along the centre of the N2 will be moved on Thursday towards the edge of the road, rendering both lanes accessible to traffic, yet allowing crews to continue the reinstatement of the bank below street level.

“There has been marked progress since the actual sides and lower end was stabilised to the point of completing the operation a week ahead of schedule and just in time to accommodate the festive season traffic,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

“We thank residents who remained patient during these trying times, as well as those who incurred increased traffic volumes along otherwise quiet suburban streets.”
