Second generation paramedic receives award

Gavin is the son of Netcare 911 media liaison officer and Toti resident, Chris Botha.

Ex-Amanzimtoti paramedic Gavin Botha (35) received a long service award after 15 years on the job.

Gavin, the son of Netcare 911 media liaison officer and Toti resident, Chris Botha, received the award at a special function at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga on Thursday, 3 November.

“I always want to be a paramedic, as I have a passion for helping people,” said Gavin, who did his schooling at Kingsway High School.

“I qualified as a basic life support paramedic in 1999 and started working part-time with Netcare 911.

In 2001 I was employed permanently and thereafter qualified as an intermediate life support paramedic.

Over the years, I worked between Amanzimtoti, Margate and Durban.

In 2012 I enrolled into Durban University of Technology to study a BHSC degree in emergency medical care and rescue.

After I qualified I accepted a position as an emergency care practitioner in Pietermaritzburg for Netcare 911.

I felt honoured to receive the award for 15 years service.

I enjoy the privilege of helping people in their moment of need, no matter the time, place or type of emergency.

The worst part, though is the loss of a life,” said Gavin.
