UPDATE: ‘Clamp’ dog makes full recovery

If you would like to adopt Achilles, call the SPCA on 031-904-2424/5.

A dog that had a clamp inserted through his hind leg to keep him from escaping has made a full recovery and is now looking for someone to adopt him.

The SUN reported on the male dog that was taken into the SPCA on Monday morning, 12 September from the Chatsworth area as a stray.

The Toti public was disgusted to read the story of how Achilles was clamped to prevent him from escaping his Chatsworth yard.

‘Achilles’, as the SPCA staff aptly named him, was rushed to the vet as he was in excruciating pain and could barely put any weight on his clamped leg.

The doctor said it was a recent wound, as recent as 48-hours. The SPCA footed all his medical bills without any way of recouping the cost, while praying for a speedy recovery.

“Achilles has come such a long way,” said Amanzimtoti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling. “After the clamp was removed, he would not let anyone near him.

I put him in a big kennel and spoke to him every morning, until he stopped his aggressive behaviour.

Welcome Cele, my kennel supervisor, then took the bull by the horns, went into the kennel, put a lead on him and Achilles was a happy boy.

We introduced him to our dog walkers and he is now taken for a walk every day.

He wags his tail when he sees us and has now started talking to us. He is still very weary of any quick movements, but with time he will learn to trust again.”

If you would like to adopt Achilles, call the SPCA on 031-904-2424/5.

The SPCA reminds residents that chaining dogs up in a yard is against the law.

Members of the public can report animal cruelty cases to the SPCA office on 031-904-2424/5. The SPCA asks that you do not post them on its Facebook page, as it is not monitored 24/7 and an animal could be left to suffer.

The SPCA after-hours emergency number is 072-122-7288.
