Delay in sinkhole repairs

Only once the walls have been declared stable will workers be able to re-build the embankment.

Unanticipated challenges have resulted in the completion date for the N2 Adams Road off-ramp sinkhole site being moved from end November to 22 December.

“What was supposed to be a week-long operation to stabilise the sides of the cavity has transformed into five weeks with several cubic metres of unanticipated concrete already pumped into the soil in an effort to establish stability,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge after a site visit on Wednesday, 2 November.

“Not only are the soil pins pulling out of what is essentially nothing more than red dune, but six metre deep stability pylons that were cast at the lower end of the cavity finds itself in nothing more than a mud sludge below the water level while continued unfavourable weather patterns do nothing to speed up the process either.”

Cllr Beetge said only once the walls have been declared stable will workers be able to safely engage and re-build the embankment to road level.

“Residents are requested to plan accordingly and to take both alternative routes and expected delays into consideration as we near the festive season with its associated increase in traffic flow,” said Cllr Beetge.
