Murder suspects arrested within a day

Confrontation outside tavern turns fatal as men follow and stab 22-year-old in Thandi Mlala Road, Illovo

A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death following an altercation outside an Illovo tavern in the early hours of Sunday morning, 30 October.

At about 2am, Mzwakhe Maphumulo was walking together with friends from Lwandle Tavern in Illovo when they were followed by three men.

Before they had left the tavern, Mzwakhe’s friends were involved in a confrontation inside the tavern. When they saw they were being followed, Mzwakhe’s friends ran off when they realized they were being followed. As he had not been involved in the confrontation, he did not run.  However, he was attacked by the men who stabbed him in the chest. He was declared deceased by paramedics in Thandi Mlala Road.

The next morning, Amanzimtoti SAPS detectives Sgt Blessing Ngcobo, Cst Sibongiseni Zithumani and Cst Wendy Buthelezi went to the tavern to view video footage of the confrontation. They positively identified the men and arrested two men. A third is still at large.
