Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services responded to the Umkomaas River bridge at about 5.15am where reports indicated a bakkie was driving along the R102 when the driver veered off the roadway and smashed through the barriers of the river bridge.

The crumpled remains of the vehicle came to rest on the beach with one man still trapped in the wreckage.

Paramedics and provincial services had to hike across the beach with all their equipment to get to the patients.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the seriously injured passenger, while the driver miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.

Paramedics stabilised the injured at the scene, before they transported them to a hospital in Scottburgh.
