New spokesman crows about animal rehab work

The former Southlands Sun journalist said he was eager about the job as it would allow him to make a difference.

THE man on a mission to educate the public on the importance of wildlife is the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (CROW) new marketing and communications officer, Sharl Els.

The 30-year-old Toti local started at the centre in September, following the promotion of previous communications officer, Paul Hoyte to director.

The former Southlands Sun journalist said he was eager about the job as it would allow him to make a difference.

“The biggest thing about doing this work is making the public aware of the importance of wildlife. People need to realise how important wild animals are and what we are doing to them,” said Sharl.

Naturally a people person, he also enjoys the other side of the job which is dealing with people and showing them the vital work CROW does to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned wildlife.

The Doonheights Primary and Toti High School alumnus enjoys collecting music, singing, playing golf, writing and watching sport and is an avid Sharks supporter.

As one of KZN’s only wildlife rehabilitation centres and the crowning jewel of Yellowwood Park, CROW aims to create awareness of wildlife care and Sharl believes ongoing education is the key.

“Education is a driving factor I hope to push. As long as the public is being educated, our wildlife will do well. I also hope to do my part to reduce illegal animal trade.”

Also new to the team at CROW is fundraiser, Jacelyn Zwart; volunteer co-ordinator, Andrew Butt and HR and admin assistant, Sally Jevon.
