Loo does rounds as Relay for Life circus comes to town

This year's relay takes place at Kuswag Skool on 3 and 4 December.

Dress up or dress down but theme your team, your banner and your tent for this year’s CANSA Relay For Life and stand the chance to win an award.

The theme for this year’s relay is ‘circus’, which takes place at Kuswag Skool on 3 and 4 December from 5pm on the Saturday to 5am on the Sunday.

Awards will be issued for the best team spirit, most funds raised (individuals), and most funds raised (corporate).

The relay is an unique event that offers everyone in the community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

It represents the hope that all of those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those fighting cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Relay For Life embraces entire communities, from the very young to the old.

Teams raise funds before and during the relay and these funds are dedicated to funding CANSA’s unique, integrated service within the community.

The relay has taken South Africa by storm and in the past year, over 100 communities participated in relay events across South Africa.

Teams of between 10 and 15 members take turns to walk or run around a track for 12 hours.

The goal is to keep one team member on the track at all times, as cancer never sleeps.

Participants enjoy camping-out, entertainment, good food, games and community camaraderie.

They all share a common purpose – their desire to help CANSA fight cancer and to support those affected by cancer.

The cost is R500 per team or R350 per youth team, which includes a set of luminaria bags.

To book your team’s spot, call Michelle Cuppan on 083-301-3750, the CANSA Care Centre on 039-682-7680, Diane Saunders on 082-291-7934 or Louise Verrips on 082-577-9566.

A new initiative for this year’s relay is a purple toilet which is doing the rounds at various businesses to garner more funds for the worthy cause. “Toti businesses can place the toilet in their reception area for a day or two, then pay a donation of R500 to nominate another business where the toilet will move to,” said Diane.

“The public is welcome to also donate wherever they see the toilet. This is the first time we are doing this in KZN. We never thought it would cause such a stir in the community but the response has been phenomenal.”

To have the toilet visit your business, call Diane or ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge on 082-718-8137.
