TRAFFIC ALERT: Rail repairs underway [PHOTOS]

Vehicles are being diverted from Bernadotte Street up Retief Street, along Athol Paton to join Lewis Drive and back down

Bernadotte Street is closed to traffic until the end of the week, while repairs to the flood-damaged railway line takes place.

Transnet, which is funding the repairs, applied to eThekwini Municipality for a permit to close the road from Retief Street to Lewis Drive from Wednesday to Friday.

This is to accommodate a crane being used to lift culverts down to the stream bed in an effort to reinforce the suspended railway line for the future.

The Sun sent queries to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) but no response was forthcoming. It is unclear how long the repairs to the railway along Bernadotte Street will take.

It is understood the goal is to render PRASA one serviceable railway line between Isipingo and Winklespruit by the end of November and PRASA expects to complete the entire project by 11 November.
