Heron dies at hands of wildlife traders

The heron was destined for the muthi market.

A black-headed heron had to be euthanased by the Centre For Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) after sustaining fatal injuries when it was caught by illegal wildlife traders in the Isipingo CBD area on Sunday, 4 September.

To capture the bird, the illegal trader used a homemade slingshot and pelted the unsuspecting bird until it could no longer fly and became an easy catch.

The heron was destined for the muthi market.

“Sadly, due to the severity of the injuries the heron sustained, he did not survive. CROW reminds the public that the capture and trade of wildlife is illegal. Should you know of or see any illegal activity involving wildlife, contact SAPS or SPCA immediately,” said CROW marketing and communications officer, Sharl Els.

Call CROW on 031-462-1127.
