Burglars accost grandmother at home

The elderly victim begged for her life when one of the men held a gun to her head.

An Athlone Park grandmother was left traumatised and sustained minor injuries after she was accosted and robbed by three armed men at her house on Churchill Road on Friday morning, 26 August.

The thieves fled the scene with cash, items and jewellery.

“Our response team and tactical unit were dispatched to the premises after receiving an alarm activation,” said Alpha Alarms communications officer, Krishnee Naidoo.

The team discovered the thieves had gained entry onto the property by jumping over the wall. The grandmother, who was at the rear of the property, told officers she had proceeded to the entrance of the house as she had assumed that her granddaughter had returned home.

The elderly woman was then accosted by one of the men, who covered her face with his hand and led her to the rear of the house where she resides. There he was joined by his two accomplices. They demanded jewellery and cash.

“The elderly victim begged for her life when one of the men held a gun to her head. One of the men removed a duvet from the bed and covered the woman while instructing her to lie on the floor,” said Naidoo.

The men ransacked the house and removed cash and jewellery, and also ripped the gold earrings the woman was wearing.

While the terrified victim lay on the floor, the men attempted but failed to gain entry into the main premises via the kitchen door. They then moved to the front door and gained entry into the house via the front gate.

They removed a 55-inch flatscreen TV, home theatre system and other items from the lounge. They also ransacked the rest of the bedrooms and stole camcorders, cellphones, laptops and jewellery.

In the master bedroom, they broke into two safes and removed a firearm and ammunition, plus more jewellery. The premises had been robbed twice previously.

The officers went in search of the thieves after receiving a description from the elderly victim, however no arrests were made.

Toti SAPS members with various emergency services also responded. The grandmother was visibly shaken and was treated on scene for shock and minor injuries by Netcare 911.

One of the men was described as stout and wore an orange T-shirt, while the second was tall, wearing a blue shirt and the third was medium height in a black shirt.
