Vets awareness event for ex-military, police

The South African Veterans’ Association (SAVA) holds a public awareness campaign at Toti Rugby Club at Hutchison Park on Saturday, 17 September from 11am to 5pm.

“SAVA caters for ex-military, police, prison wardens and Transnet police pre-1994,” said regional chairman, Reg Tischendorf.

“We are a non-political organisation that was formed in 1967. We hold four to five commemorations a year.”

The organisation is now focused on the pro-patria gathering on 17 September where it recognises fallen comrades who paid with their lives in full.

Sava has about 2,500 South African members, plus members overseas in countries such as the UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.

“Our main aim is to bring ex-soldiers together,” said national chairman, Gideon Pieterse. “Many of our members are pensioners and retired soldiers.

We invite all veterans to come and join us at the gathering. We want to introduce and create an awareness of SAVA to those who are not already members, share our mission and vision, and attract new members.

We also want to build camaraderie with our friends and military buddies from pre-1994, share our stories, strengthen our ties with each other and our families, and make new friends.”

A set braai menu is on offer to adults attending the gathering at a cost of R100 per person, with a ‘kiddies’ menu for the youngsters. There will be a cash bar available. Take along your own camping chairs, table and gazebo.

“The idea of the gathering is just to relax, enjoy the day and be with friends,” said Reg. “RSVP by 2 September to give everybody enough time to make arrangements and diarise the date.”
