Crime network swoops on knife-wielding necklace thieves

While trying to handcuff the man, Triple M was bitten on the thumb.

Two armed robbers were caught in a combined effort from Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO), Metro Police K9 unit and ET Rapid Response members after they robbed a woman of a chain and cellphone at Toti railway station at about noon on Monday, 15 August.

“Patrolling CCPO and Blue Security officers received a message from people in Toti to say they were chasing two men from Toti station who were involved in an armed robbery of a gold chain,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

Officers Mbuyiselo ‘Triple M’ Mdunjane and Nhlanhla Mbambo started searching for the men, along with Metro Police K9 officer, Shawn Jooste and ET Rapid Response members.

Triple M and Mbambo went into the bush near the N2 highway where the men had fled into and not long after, they spotted one man who fled further into the bush.

After a short chase, he was apprehended and a large knife found in his possession.

“On their return to the station where the apprehended thief was going to show them where their bag was hidden, Triple M and Mbambo noticed a man near Afsaal flats who matched the second suspect’s description,” said Snodey.

They stopped and searched the man, who was sweating profusely, and found another large knife. While trying to handcuff the man, Triple M was bitten on the thumb, but he still managed to subdue the thief. He was later treated for his wound.

The victim recognised and identified the two men and the knives used in the attack.
