Ocean View dumping incenses resident

When I complained, the municipality was not sure who the land belonged to.

A St Winifreds resident is gatvol of the continuous dumping at the end of Ocean View Road.

Mike Techet said only once in the 16 years he has been living there has council cleared the bushes adjacent to his property.

“When I complained, the municipality was not sure who the land belonged to,” he said.

“People drive past, open their doors and throw their rubbish out.”

The bushes on either side of the road are littered with, among the usual household waste and garden refuse, car windscreens and computer parts.

“It looks like a backyard operator is using this as his own, personal dumpsite,” said Mike. “Or someone is being paid by a company to legally dump their waste, but is instead pocketing the money.

I’ve noticed it has escalated in the last year-and-a-half.”

Judging from the location of the majority of the rubbish, it looks like people stop on Lantana Road and throw their rubbish down the steep bank.

“This is such a beautiful area and the animal life I see in the bush is incredible. I’ve seen bushpigs, duiker, river and banded mongoose and the birdlife is amazing.

There is a pair of breeding fish eagles that nest there. It would be a pity to cut the bush, but we can’t live like this with all the rubbish.”

The Sun sent queries to eThekwini Municipality regarding the dumping and who the land belongs to, but no response was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
