City units adopt Isipingo River clean-up for Mandela Day project

The group removed waste and cleared the overgrowth from the river.

TO commemorate the birthday of the former statesman Nelson Mandela, and to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the environment and water, various municipal units participated in the Adopt-A-River programme in Isipingo on Sunday, 17 July. The group removed waste and cleared the overgrowth from the river. The river had been polluted with domestic waste, bottles, cans, garden refuse and food packaging.

The Community Participation and Action Support Unit assisted in mobilising more than 300 community members and volunteers who played a vital role in the clean-up.

The initiative also included an awareness and educational campaign to raise awareness about the work done by the water and sanitation unit.

Durban Solid Waste held a street campaign to draw crowds to the education mobile unit. The community was encouraged about waste management and how to stop illegal dumping.

“We call on residents to join hands with the city and help us deal with the problem of litter and pollution at the source,” said eThekwini head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

“The municipality is committed to maintaining a clean environment by utilising all its resources to make it a success. But we cannot do it alone, we need residents to be the watchdogs in their respective communities and help us create a clean city we can all be proud to live in.”
