Alert CCPO spotter hooks illegal netter

George Snodey spotted a vehicle he recognised from a previous netting case.

AN ILLEGAL netter was nabbed by an alert Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) committee member on Sunday morning, 17 July.

George Snodey was driving to Umkomaas when he spotted a vehicle he recognised from a previous netting case.

“The white Opel Astra station wagon was parked on the side of the road with the bonnet up,” he said. “I recognised the vehicle and the registration number from an arrest in November.”

Snodey called colleague Gary van Sluis, who was instrumental in the previous arrest, and when he arrived they searched the vehicle.

They found three gill nets and over 100 fish, many undersized. “There were barbel, bull mullet, and juvenile rock salmon and grunter. The majority of the fish were mud bream, which led us to believe he had caught them either at Umnini Dam or high up the Umgababa River.”

The man, the same one caught netting on the Illovo River in November, also had over R500 in small bills in his possession. “This indicated he had probably already sold quite a lot of the fish before we caught up with him,” said Snodey.

The man was taken to Umkomaas police station and members of KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife detained him.
