Artists to delve into Cubism

When I have completed a painting, I never want to part with it; it is as if the painting has become a part of me.

THE Upper South Coast Art Association (USCAA) will hold its July meeting in the Amanzimtoti library activities hall on Saturday, 16 July.

The meeting will begin at 2pm and end at about 4pm.

Refreshments will be supplied for a small fee.

The demo this month will be given by Jennifer Sutton. Jennifer feels a painting should portray the soul of the artist, capturing the mood and essence of the scene, with the ability to move the person who stopped and gazed at what perchance caught their eye. Jennifer was born in Durban, grew up in Dundee and went to school at St Johns and currently lives in Waterfall.

Painting for me is like walking in the mist, crying in the rain, and laughing in the sunshine, a feeling of being alive

As a child, she was always drawing, colouring and painting. It was only later in life that she was fortunate enough to start painting, finding what mediums suited her, and what she really enjoyed. She feels that to paint each day is a privilege, which she loves sharing with others. Her subject matter is varied and she work in oils and polychromos pencil crayons. Jennifer says: “Painting for me has to be picture perfect. I enjoy portraying a vision, capturing the mood and the movement. I derive immense pleasure from the detail, the magic of colour, and I have a great need to capture the light. When I have completed a painting, I never want to part with it – it is as if the painting has become a part of me. Painting for me is like walking in the mist, crying in the rain, and laughing in the sunshine, a feeling of being alive.”

The afternoon meeting will be preceded by a drawing session, which is open to the public at no charge. The drawing session will begin at 9am and end at about noon. The drawing session this month will be conducted by Venila Govendar and her emphasis will be on Cubism, Picasso style. Take along your usual drawing materials but be sure to include charcoal and pastels. USCAA looks forward to seeing you there.
