Mystery of missing cats

CATS continue to go missing in the Bernadotte Street area.

One resident, who did not wished to be named, said his cat went missing on Thursday, 16 June and when his wife went door to door to ask their neighbours, they were astounded by the number of people who said they too had missing cats.

“Something is up in our neighbourhood,” he said. “People’s cats are disappearing. We searched all over, including in the bushes, and we didn’t find anything, not even a carcass. Someone said they use cats to rile up dogs for dog fights and that could explain our missing cats.”

In April the Sun reported 12 cats had gone missing from the same property in Bernadotte Street in just over two months.

The tenant, who only wanted to be named as A Pretorius, lived in a granny flat on the property and rescued cats privately at her own expense.

Her first cat went missing on Friday, 5 February while she was away. Up to 20 April, a total of 12 had gone missing, with three to four disappearing a weekend. The tally now sits at 18 cats missing since February.

The cat lover suspected one of her neighbours was possibly shooting her rescued cats, but had no evidence to lodge a case with the SPCA. Missing cat posters had also been ripped off lamp posts.

If anyone in the area has had a cat go missing recently, call 078-935-8182 to assess just how serious is the problem.
