Elusive sards still unsighted

There were some red-eye in the Port St John's area

NO sardines have been netted on the South Coast as yet, but there is still hope Toti-ites will get to experience the appearance of the greatest shoal on earth this winter.

The latest news from the KZN Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade, who undertook a fly-over on Tuesday morning, is not heartening but he believes it’s still early days.

“There were some red-eye in the Port St John’s area when we flew over, but the activity we saw at Hole-in-the-Wall two weeks ago has disappeared,” he said. “Last week the thousands of gannets we saw there had moved and only some dolphins remained. We suspected there were sardines there, but it’s now a bit confusing.

Traditionally the sardine run used to happened during the July school holidays, but it moved to June more recently. We have had them surface as late as September, so it might still happen.” However, the ocean’s temperature needs to drop more to entice the little silver fish to visit our shores.
