Armed robber rescued from angry mob’s clutches

Furious mob of passersby and taxi drivers attacked him in Mahes Road.

An armed robber was fortunate to be rescued by response officers from the clutches of an angry mob after he and an accomplice robbed two women in Reunion on Thursday morning, 26 May.

The robber got more than he bargained for when a furious mob of passersby and taxi drivers attacked him in Mahes Road after he and his partner in crime robbed the women of their handbag and cellphone.

“Officers were in Isipingo when they were alerted to the commotion and saw a man running towards Old Main Road at about 6.30am, chased by the incensed mob,” said Alpha Alarms communications officer, Krishnee Naidoo. “They cornered him on Old Main Road. He pulled out a large knife, but he was quickly subdued.”

The robber was removed from the clutches of the incensed mob who had ripped his clothing in the attack. The officers escorted him to the spot where he had dumped the stolen handbag and retrieved most of its contents.

“The robber told officers he had stashed the cellphone and cash in his pockets before discarding the handbag. The cellphone was retrieved from his discarded clothing, but the cash, estimated to be about R150, and one of the victim’s driver’s license could not be accounted for,” said Naidoo.

The robber was handed over to the police, but unfortunately his accomplice fled the scene.

The victims were ecstatic to have their belongings returned to them and thanked the officers for their quick response.
