Armed robber gets 35 year sentence

An armed robber who robbed a KwaMakhutha woman last year was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment in Umlazi Regional Court on Thursday, 12 May.

Emmanuel Nkosinathi (29) and an accomplice accosted the 48-year-old woman while she was loading catering equipment on Wade Road at about 11.30pm on 29 August.

“They pointed a firearm at her and demanded cash, before they forced her into the vehicle and drove off,” said Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala of the SAPS KZN media centre.

“They took her cellphone and dumped her on a gravel road. The victim screamed for help and was rescued by a security guard.”

The accused was arrested by the police. Charges of hijacking, kidnapping and robbery were opened for investigation by KwaMakhutha police station.

The accused made several court appearances until he was sentenced to 15 years for hijacking, 15 years for robbery and five years for kidnapping. The robbery and carjacking sentences will run concurrently. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
